The challenge

Jade set out on a project to centralise and unify historical data from their ERP, Microsoft Dynamics Business Central, in Snowflake. The platform held years of operational data which needed to be replicated and validated. After trying existing SaaS integrations solutions, to no avail, the project was entering a crucial phase where a new solution needed to be chosen, to meet the end of financial year reporting deadline. Business Central contained several complex data structures and API nuances.

Our initial choice of ELT tool missed 20% of data that was critical to meeting the project objectives and was unable to go back far enough in time to capture the full history.

The solution

Working with local Christchurch based Snowflake partner, Data Engineers NZ, the team decided to pivot to Omnata Sync, a Snowflake Native Data Application.  This shift entailed hosting the entire data acquisition process within Jade's Snowflake account. Not only did this reduce the security exposure of the solution, but it also transitioned the pricing model from row-based to a fixed daily pricing structure, ensuring predictable billing with unrestricted data ingestion volume.  And most importantly, allowed Jade to easily acquire all the data they needed for the initiative.

Working closely together as a three-way partnership, Omnata, Data Engineers and Jade were able to speed up sprint cycles and resolve the issues faced by the previous tooling choice.

Through a tightly aligned three-way partnership involving Omnata, Data Engineers, and Jade, sprint cycles accelerated, and challenges from previous tooling choices were addressed effectively. Strong partnerships proved pivotal in successfully transitioning to the Omnata Sync Engine and achieving desired outcomes. Jade's existing partnership with Data Engineers fostered a level of trust that empowered Jade's Head of Analytics, James Graham, to make pragmatic and decisive pivoting decisions. Similarly, Data Engineers' partnership with Omnata instilled confidence in recommending their product to Jade.

Moreover, both Data Engineers and Omnata have great working relationships with Snowflake, which was paramount given that the Omnata Sync Engine is a Snowflake Native Application.

After the success in this early phase of the project, Jade has now moved onto acquiring data from new sources in line with their roadmap, adding data ingestion from HubSpot also through the Omnata suite of connectors.

We were very lucky to have a strong relationship with Data Engineers NZ and Omnata, which enabled us to be agile, pivot quickly, and turn the project around.
